   MILITARY MACAWS BEHAVIOR AND TRAINING

A properly trained Military Macaw is even-tempered and affectionate. This is a very high-energy bird and will need plenty of attention and socialization. They are fairly large birds and do require a large cage. The cage should be large enough for them to fully spread their wings and tall enough so that their tails do not drag on the cage floor. There should also be plenty of room for them to play with their toys in the cage. A minimum size for a Military Macaw cage would be 3 feet X 2 feet X 4 feet. Cages that are too small can cause behavioral and even health problems.

The cage should also be very sturdy. A Military Macaw can take apart bolts if they are within reach and they will often tear apart less sturdy cages. Replacing cages can get expensive and it is possible for a bird to injure itself on the broken pieces of a cage they have destroyed.

Provide them with plenty of activities inside the cage to help keep them occupied. They like to climb so provide them with ladders and sturdy chains. They will also need a couple of horizontal bars to exercise their feet. Keep a variety of wooden toys on hand and change them out often so the bird does not become bored with them. Acrylic toys are a good choice for Military Macaws as long as they are not small enough to be swallowed. Keep in mind that this is a large bird and will require toys that are too large to be swallowed and cause choking.

Military Macaws will need several hours a day outside of their cage, even when they have a very large cage. They need time to roam and they especially need to be able to spend time with humans. Consider putting a small play gym in the living room where they can interact with the people in the house and still have their own play area.

Military Macaws can learn a limited vocabulary. Some will learn more words than others. Patience is the key when teaching your macaw to talk. There are a variety of training courses for macaws and the Military Macaw, with its mild temperament and even disposition will benefit greatly from these courses.
